Martin B-26 Marauder

Early short wing B-26s had the highest wing loading of any military airplane at the time, with only a 65 ft span. It was a very high performance aircraft but gained a bad reputation with pilots. “Jimmy” Doolittle demonstrated to the crews that what they had heard about the airplane was "pure bunk".

Commenting on the high accident rate of the Martin B-26, Lieutenant Colonel Doolittle said, “There wasn’t anything about it that a good piloting skill couldn’t overcome.”
