Lockheed P-38J Lightning

The P-38 excelled in the war against Japan, but the very high and very cold environment unique to the European air war caused severe power plant and cockpit heating difficulties. This made flying and fighting at altitudes that frequently approached 12,320 m (40,000 ft) nearly impossible.

Porky II is now 23 Skidoo. The original (S/N 42-66504) was flown by Capt. Perry J. Dahl of the 432nd Fighter Squadron, 475th Fighter Group, "Satan’s Angels." In November of 1944, Captain Dahl was involved in a midair collision and parachuted into enemy territory. He was captured by a Japanese patrol but was rescued by Filipino guerrillas. He is credited with nine confirmed and one probable kills.
