Blimp Airdock
On Thursday, May 18, 2006, there was a large explosion
and fire at the airdock. Some 15 to 20 Akron fire companies came
to the scene. Work crews were doing major renovations to the airdock,
replacing roofing, windows and siding, and removing interior catwalks,
debris, and many of the existing offices.

You can see the fire damage on the left side of this picture. Lockheed
Martin is renovating the airdock to build a prototype airship for
the military. Construction and assembly of the High Altitude Airship
was scheduled to begin in 2007 with the first flight scheduled for
2009. |
