The Kingfisher was the U.S. Navy's primary ship-based, scout and observation aircraft in World War II. For antisubmarine work, the Kingfisher could carry two 100 lb bombs or two 325 lb depth charges. It had a fixed .30 caliber machine gun in front of the pilot and a .30 caliber machine gun for the gunner seated behind the pilot.
In March 1942, this aircraft was assigned to the battleship USS Indiana. Lt. j.g. Rollin M. Batten Jr. was awarded the Navy Cross for making a daring rescue in this airplane under heavy enemy fire on July 4, 1944.
