The supersonic Lockheed Martin Joint Strike Fighter X-35B
is a short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft. It first flew at
Edwards Air Force Base on 16 July 2001. The STOVL version features a Rolls-Royce
(Allison) designed lift-fan located behind the cockpit.
This aircraft is the first X-35 ever built. On July 7, 2006, the production model F-35 was officially named F-35 Lightning II by T. Michael Moseley, Chief of Staff USAF.
