On 21 May 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh completed the first
solo nonstop transatlantic flight in history, flying this Ryan NYP. He
named this plane the Spirit of St. Louis in honor of his supporters
in St. Louis, Missouri, who paid for the aircraft. "NYP" is
an acronym for "New York-Paris."
On April 30, 1928, the Spirit of St. Louis made its final flight, from St. Louis to Washington, D.C, where Lindbergh presented the aircraft to the Smithsonian Institution.
