Supermarine Spitfire
L.F. Mk IXe

The L.F.Mk IXe Spitfire had a 1580 hp R.R. Merlin 66 engine and the "B" Wing. The IXe also had two .50 Browning machine guns and two 20mm cannons in place of the four .303 guns used in prior marks. "L.F." stands for light fighter.

Supermarine Spitfire L.F. Mk IXe
There was no designation for British aircraft (i.e. P for Pursuit, C for Cargo); only codes that can follow the names. In the case of Spitfire L.F.IXe, the "L.F." means light fighter, the "Mk" stands for Mark (meaning major variant), the "IX" is the variant of the design, and the "e" is the wing version (the IX had more than one wing version).
