The F-100 was the first production airplane capable
of flying faster than the speed of sound in level flight (760 mph). The
F-100D had the first autopilot designed for a supersonic jet and a low-altitude
bombing system. This Super Sabre (56-3141) served two tours in Vietnam
and then served as a target drone. Her tail was damaged by hits.
In Vietnam, the F-100 was used as a fighter-bomber in ground-support missions
such as attacking bridges, road junctions, and troop concentrations.
