The F-14A was designed for air superiority, fleet air defense, and precision strikes against ground targets. It had a top speed of Mach 2.34 (1,544 mph). The Tomcat first flew on 21 December 1970, and its first Fleet deployment was on the USS Enterprise (VF-1 and 2) in mid-1974.
