Statue of St. Stephen
Saint Stephen the Great (977-1038), is the patron saint
of Hungary. He was baptized in 985 and succeeded his father as a Christian
Magyar chieftain in 997. He became king of Hungary on Christmas Day of
1000 and forcibly converted pagan Hungarians to Christianity and actively
promoted the Christian faith throughout his reign.
