The Chain Bridge or Széchenyi lánchíd
was the first permanent river crossing to connect Pest and Buda.
The 375 meter bridge was opened on 20 November 1849. It was destroyed
by the Germans late in World War II, rebuilt, and reopened in 1949.
The floodlights on the bridge were added in 1999 to mark the 150th
anniversary of the bridge.
The Chain Bridge closely resembles London's Thames Bridge because
both were designed by Tierney Clark and built by the Scottish engineer
Adam Clark (no relation). Adam Clark also built the 350 meter long
tunnel under Castle Hill.
