Heroes' Square was built in 1896 to celebrate the
millennium of the Hungarian conquest of the Carparthian Basin. The
36-meter high column in the center supports the winged figure of
the Archangel Gabriel. The four sculptures on the top of the two-part
colonnade represent Work and Prosperity, War, Peace, and Knowledge
and Glory.
According to legend, Gabriel appeared in the dreams of Saint Stephen,
the first Hungarian king, and gave him the holy crown.
