Centurion Tank,
IDF Modification
This IDF modified Centurion is the first tank you
see as you drive up to the museum entrance. In 1966, Britain allowed
the IDF to purchase obsolete Centurion tanks. The IDF upgraded them
with a 105mm gun and American radios. Later they were re-engined
with an American diesel engine (common with the M48 and M60) and
a new transmission.

When the Six Day War (1967) broke out, the IDF had 293 modified Centurions
ready for combat. During the war, Israel captured an additional 30
Centurion tanks from Jordan. Jordan had a total of 44 Centurion tanks
at the time. |
