Baker was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1860.
In 1861 he resigned this Senatorship to enter the Union Army, commanding
a Brigade at the Battle Ball's Bluff, where he was killed on 21 October
1861.
I took this photo because it struck me as extremely pompous
and egotistical to wrap one's self in a Roman toga. The man would have
been more dignified in the normal dress of his day.
