The IAF purchased four Mirage IIIBJs for operational
training on the Mirage. They even served in combat and shot down several
enemy aircraft. In the late 1960s this aircraft was transferred to Israel
Aircraft Industries as an experimental aircraft. The other three IIIBJs
were sold to Argentina.
Israel developed the Kfir after the French refused to deliver 50 paid
for Mirage VJs. This is the prototype for the Kfir that first flew on
19 October 1970. It's a Mirage IIIBJ with a General Electric J-79 (Phantom)
engine.
