The Royal Palace dominates the Castle District.
This is not original but incorporates features from the original
historic structures of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
The original palace was destroyed by the pan-European Christian
army which liberated Buda from the Turks in 1686. Another reconstruction
was burnt to the ground during the 1944-45 siege of Budapest.
This post-WWII reconstruction includes Baroque and Gothic elements
and now houses the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History
Museum and the National Széchenyi Library.
